Acid Reflux (GERD)

According Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) (also known as acid reflux) is a digestive disorder consisting of reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. The acid reflux occurs as a result of transient relaxations of the lower esophageal sphincter or when the sphincter tone adapts inadequately to changes in abdominal pressure, according to the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.

Signs and Symptoms
Gastroesopahageal reflux disease (GERD) signs and symptoms in infants and children:

“The incidence of GERD in infancy has been estimated at approximately 18% and becomes more common as children become older. One possibly for this may be due to the ability of the older patient to report symptoms more accurately.”

Chiropractic and Acid Reflux
Chiropractic adjustments do not treat acid reflux. In our chiropractic office we look to see if nerve disturbance is present in the spinal column. At times, infants and children have stress and tension on the nerves that supply the esophagus and stomach. If these nerves are under increased stress and tension, the function of the nerves typically decreases. A trained chiropractor will find the area of the spine with stress (misalignment), and gently adjust the vertebrae. This adjustment increases the function of the nerve system. The nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body. When the body and nervous system are functioning at its most optimal level, typically there is a reduction of symptoms.

Research
Even though more research is needed in one case study a 3 month old with medically-diagnosed GERD was treated with chiropractic adjustments and craniosacral therapy. After four patient visits consisting of the chiropractic adjustment and craniosacral therapy symptoms of GERD were significantly decreased and patient exhibited total resolution of symptoms within approximately three months of care. This case study demonstrates infants and children suffering from acid reflux (GERD) may benefit from chiropractic care.
