Otitis Media (a middle ear infection) is any inflammation of the middle ear. Ear Infections are the most common childhood illness treated by pediatricians.
Common Treatments:
Antibiotics: Antibiotics are useful for infections caused by bacteria. However, most ear infections are viral where the antibiotics becomes useless.
Ear Tubes: Ear tubes are inserted through an outpatient surgical procedure. Using anesthesia, an incision (small hole) in the eardrum or tympanic membrane is made where an artificial tube is placed within the ear canal.
Many parents are excited about a conservative approach:
Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic care helps to reduce nerve disturbance and restore normal function. The nerves that regulate, control, and supply the ear start at the brainstem, travel down the spinal cord, and exit out between two vertebrae in the neck. Misalignments of the bones of the neck may compromise the function of the nerve signals to and from the ear. This compromise can affect the child’s ear from fighting off infection and impair drainage. We do not treat infections of any type. Simply, we as chiropractors check to see if the bones in the neck are properly aligned. If the bones are misaligned causing nerve disturbance, we gently reduce it with safe chiropractic adjustments. For infants or small children, an adjustment would be done with light touch of our fingertips in the right direction and place.
